4×4 Camp Grounds That Are a Must to Visit
At Canberra Towbar Fitters, we love to get out and about and test all of our products in the real world. We have put together a list of 3 of the best 4×4 camp grounds you need to visit around Canberra:
Location 1: Coolaman Mountain Camping Area
You can visit this camping area all year round as it provides a perfect staging post to hike and bike ride to Nichols Gorge and Clarke Gorge. Make sure you rug up in Winter though as it can get pretty cold.
Highlights in the area are spectacular rock formations, mysterious caves and gorgeous waterfalls.
How far away is it? It is just under 3 hours from Canberra.
Recommended stay: A short or long weekend trip is ideal.
Location 2: Flea Creek Campground
Spring, Autumn and early Summer are the best times to head along to this campground. Located in Brindabella National Park, the campsite sits right on the banks of the tranquil Flea Creek under the shade of a beautiful grove. Enjoy the serene trickling of the creek as you catch fish, watch for owls, or simply relax in your 4WD camper.
How far away is it? It is just over 1 hour from Canberra.
Recommended stay: This is ideal for day trips or a weekend stay.
Location 3: Honey Suckle Campground
This is an all year round site but maybe steer clear of the hottest part of summer and coldest part of winter. If you’re visiting the Booroomba Rocks and the Australian Alps Walking Track in Namadgi National Park, one fascinating place to stay is Honeysuckle Campground. Not only does the campground offer access to both, but it also makes a great staging area for exploring Mount Tennent to the north and Orroral Valley to the south.
Also of historical note is the fact that Honeysuckle Campground used to be Honeysuckle Tracking Station. In 1969, it was that tracking station which transmitted Neil Armstrong’s famous moon walk. While the antenna no longer stands, parts of the station are still intact.
How far away is it? Less than an hour from Canberra.
Recommended stay: Being so close to Canberra this can easily be a day trip and with so much to do you, can stay the weekend to explore the area.
