You pack your trusty two-wheeler on the back of the car to head out for a ride, but do you know your number plate requirements when using a bike rack?
Before you hit the road, it’s important to familiarise yourself with the rules and requirements so you don’t score a moment of panic if you see the flashing red and blue lights.
Canberra Towbar Fitters have the best advice on your number plate requirements when using a bike rack so make sure you keep reading below or call us for more information on (02) 6113 0549.
Your number plate requirements
If you haven’t travelled with a bike rack on the back of your car before, there’s a couple of things you need to know before you head out:
- Bike racks cannot obscure your number plate.
- Your number plate must be seen clearly and from at least 20 metres away.
Where to get a mini number plate
Australian Capital Territory
In the Australian Capital Territory, you’ll need a new bike rack number plate that’s the same number and material as your existing number plate. Prices start at $41.70 for metal and $74.50 for plastic options.
To order plates you’ll need to go to Access Canberra or contact them on 13 22 81.

– Option 2: download, print and complete the Number Plates and/or Cancellation of Registration Form and lodge by mail or in person at a Service NSW Centre.
