What is a brake controller?
Brake controllers are used and should most definitely be fitted to your vehicle if you’re towing a caravan, heavy trailer or horse float with electric brakes.
Using a brake controller lets the trailer or caravan’s brake system know how much braking power is needed to stop, allowing the electric brakes to take care of most of the braking power without relying on your vehicle to use all its power to stop or slow the caravan or trailer down.
Do I need an electric or mechanical braking system?
When towing heavier than 750kg, you must have either a mechanical or electrical braking system installed. If towing more than 2 tonnes, electric brakes must be fitted.
